Superb Owl Saturday coming back to Trillium Nature Center

Super Bowl LX is on its way, and the Buffalo Audubon Society is bringing back their twist on the gridiron grudge match with the return of Superb Owl Saturday.

The day of fun is happening February 7 at the Trillium Nature Center, and will feature on Owl Prowl as well as meet and greets with the center’s feathery friends.

Have you ever seen a leucistic bird? This leucistic female Northern Cardinal was spotted this week in Snyder, New York, by ?@buffaloaudubon9586?’s Director of Development Lynn Westcott! ?

Leucism is a genetic condition that prevents pigments from reaching some—or sometimes all—of a bird’s feathers. So how can we tell this cardinal is a female? Our field editor Kenn Kaufman says that if you ever find a “white” cardinal that looks like this, it’s most likely a female.

Rare bird spotted in Western New York! Wait until you see the video posted below. This bird doesn’t look real. You might even think it is something the folks at Disney created.

Even though there are approximately 125 million cardinals flying around North America, we don’t have encounters with them every day. It is far less common to spot a leucistic Northern Cardinal. They say 1 out of every 2,000 cardinals is leucistic and one was recently spotted near Buffalo.

Beaver Meadow Nature Center announces rebrand

The nature center will now be known as the Trillium Nature Center.

NORTH JAVA, N.Y. — A Western New York nature center is changing its name and updating facilities after decades in the community.

The Buffalo Audubon Society has announced that the Beaver Meadow Nature Center in North Java will now be named the Trillium Nature Center as part of the facility’s rebrand.

Buffalo as a “Bird-Safe” City

Along 4 The Hike: Beaver Meadow Nature Preserve

NORTH JAVA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Beaver Meadow Nature Preserve in North Java, Wyoming County, is a 324-acre nature preserve that serves as the headquarters of the Buffalo Audubon Society. There’s a big focus on education here, with a storybook trail where pages of a children’s book are displayed every few feet.

The trails are very well marked, and you can get some nice views from both sides of Beaver Pond. If you’re hoping to see the preserve’s namesake beavers, it is possible, although they do tend to be nocturnal creatures. One more note: dogs are not welcome here because of the numerous other animals who call the preserve home.

Nesting Common Terns Get a New Island Home in Buffalo
