All Green, No Screen — No Cap: Everything You Need to Know About Nature Camp

If you’re looking for a summer camp experience that goes beyond learning about nature, and instead, invites children of all ages to grow, learn, and understand themselves in nature… welcome.

Nature Camp at Beaver Meadow isn’t a “drop them off and hope for the best” situation. It’s the kind of camp that parents talk about years later. The kind where former campers come back as counselors, then bring their own kids, because somewhere between the pond, the woods, and the muddy sneakers, something real happened.

And while your child will still learn about nature with engaging, hands-on activities, the bigger truth is this: nature is the classroom.

Here’s a look into the ins and outs of our summer Nature Camp, how to choose the right option for your child, and which activities they’ll explore with us in their time here—all of which are designed to not only help them learn about nature, but about themselves, too.

What we actually do all day (besides mysteriously curing boredom)

To put it simply, no two days are alike here at Nature Camp at Beaver Meadow Preserve.

What better way to learn scientific skills than through witnessing the science of nature in action? These campers cluster around a sample to do just that in our 2025 Nature Camp.

Across our immersive activities in the ponds, wetlands, meadows—and soon, our treetops, with the addition of an ADA-accessible treehouse complex!—we encourage our campers to learn about nature in one of our favorite ways: by being in nature.

That said, we hike. A lot. Not “march in a straight line” kind of hiking. Real exploration. Trails that turn into discoveries.

They dip nets into the ponds and experience the wonder of finding a frog or insect dwelling inside, before returning them back home.

Also: kids get dirty. On purpose. And shockingly, they like it.

So, what exactly do we teach?

  • Wildlife exploration (birds, amphibians, insects, tracks, ponds, the whole cast)
  • Nature hikes and trail skills (how to move through the woods with awareness, not chaos)
  • Hands-on science (observation, questions, cause-and-effect, systems)
  • Outdoor skills and team challenges (cooperation, leadership, problem-solving)
  • Creative nature moments (journaling, building, imagining, storytelling, art-in-the-wild)

More specifics: Choosing the right option for your child

Just as no two days are the same at Nature Camp, we also know no two children are the same.

That’s why our camps are tailored by age group to meet your child’s unique needs:

Explorers

For campers who have completed K, 1st, or 2nd grade

Explore nature using all five senses, encouraging exploratory growth through guided programs. Throughout the day, campers will record their experiences and explorations in their take home nature journal.

Adventurers

For campers who have completed 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade

Participate in adventures across Beaver Meadow’s diverse ecosystems. Experience the peace of standing in an old growth forest, running through the meadow chasing insects, and searching their dip nets for creatures in the pond.

Avian Expeditioners

For campers who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade

Take your camper’s love of birds to the next level. Receive their very own pair of Vortex Binoculars to keep and take home, and use them to get close-up looks at some of the amazing birds of Western New York.

Wilderness Expeditioners

For campers who have completed 6th, 7th, or 8th grade

One-Day Camps

For campers who have completed K through 5th grade

Get to experience some of the favorite camp programs for one day! Each one-day camp is different—from insects and outdoor adventurers, to the wonders of ponds and trees or birding.

Add-ons: Avian & Wilderness Expeditioners “Plus

Depending on your camper’s age, you can also choose to upgrade your experience to add in an overnight for one evening, with bonus activities to enjoy—keeping the fun of summer camp going for an extra night!

What your kid learns (the stuff you actually care about)

Beyond learning how to start a campfire, build a shelter, identify a bird, or what the creepy-crawlies lurking in the pond are called, we notice there is often so much more that comes out of spending a few weeks in our camp.

Salamander sighting! Whether encountering frogs, birds, or other living things, no two days at Nature Camp are the same.

Here’s what our parents notice by week two:

  • Awareness: Kids start paying attention: to the trail, to their friends, to a bird call overhead, to how their own body feels when they slow down.
  • Patience: Nature doesn’t perform on demand. You don’t “make” a turtle appear; you learn to wait. That skill transfers everywhere.
  • Confidence: Not the loud kind. The real kind. The kind that says, “I can handle this.”
  • Focus: The woods are basically attention training disguised as fun.
  • Resilience: They try things, fail safely, try again, and realize failure isn’t fatal. That lesson is priceless.
  • Social confidence (especially for younger teens): Middle school can be… a lot. Camp gives them something better than status games: shared mission, shared humor, shared experience, real belonging.

How it works for you (scholarships, remote workspaces & more)

We think nature should be available for everyone.

To help make our Nature Camp accessible for all, we offer generous scholarships awarded based on application.

To learn more and apply, please fill out the form below (also available on our website’s “Nature Camp” page) and send completed forms by email to info@buffaloaudubon.org, or by mail to Trillium Nature Center.

To boot, we know that parents have more on their plate today than ever. So, for parents and guardians who work remotely, we can offer a shared workspace with Wi-Fi, if you’d like to stay at Trillium Nature Center during the camp. And you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful nature center and trails during work breaks!

Why kids keep coming back

Because it’s not the same week on repeat. Every day has the possibility of surprise: a frog in the net, a hawk overhead, a new friend, a counselor who sees them, a moment where they do something brave and surprise themselves.

But don’t take our word for it. Let’s hear from some former campers-turned-counselors:

“This camp has been the highlight of my summer since 2011,” said Salah Griffis, a longtime camper who then became a Nature Camp counselor. “Coming back each year and seeing the smiles on the children’s faces makes me so excited. The memories I have made here will forever be engraved in my mind as the best summers of my life.”

Zach Kolesar, also a former camper-turned-Nature Camp counselor, shares about his experience, as well.

“I’ve been coming here since kindergarten and Beaver Meadow has been a key reason I’m going into an environmental science career,” he said. “It is amazing to be able to share my knowledge and hope some of these kids go down a similar path.”

Like Salah, Zach, and numerous others, kids come back because:

  • They feel known here.
  • They feel capable here.
  • They get to be their real selves here.
  • And honestly? They laugh a lot.

There’s a kind of joy that happens when kids are outside long enough for their nervous system to unclench. You can watch it in real time.

Why parents keep bringing their kids back… years later

Because this camp creates the rare thing: a lasting memory that actually changes a person.

Not in a dramatic movie-trailer way. In the quiet, meaningful way. The way that shows up later as:

  • “I’m not afraid of trying new things.”
  • “I know how to calm down.”
  • “I remember who I am when life gets loud.”
  • “I can lead.”
  • “I can belong.”

“We all enjoyed camp so much for all the great activities and wonderful care you provided for [my child]!” said Alicia Larson, a parent of one of our Explorer campers. “Thank you for offering such a well-organized and longer-term summer camp option in the Southtowns area. We would have struggled for options without your program. We are so grateful for you!”

Years from now, when your kid is grown, they won’t remember every worksheet they ever did in school.

But they will remember the summer they felt brave in the woods.

The bottom line

Nature Camp is exciting, educational, and grounding because it’s built on something timeless: kids need nature to become themselves.

So yes, they’ll learn a thing or two about birds and trails and ponds and wild places.

But what they’ll take home is much bigger: confidence, awareness, patience, focus, friendship, and a memory that sticks.

And you just might notice it at the dinner table. No cap.
